Spektrum’s frames are made of plant-based non-food derivates from corn. The details on Spektrum’s frames are made out non-food resin and castor bean derivates. 64% of the product is produced of plant based bio material and recyclable materials. Through Spektrum’s process they are modified into polymers and become pellets that are injected with colour. The dye process ensures a superior durability and depth of colour for all their frames. This vastly improves colour performance, durability and scratch resistance. The process also spares workers and our environment from exposure to hazardous solvents and chemicals.
The ever-ongoing quest to make Spektrum products ever more sustainable has led them to the use of bio-based materials derived from plants throughout their collections. For the Spektrum Performance Eyewear collection this means constructing their frames in oil extracted from the amazing castor bean. Spektrum’s high-performance frames are made mainly from castor oil and reduces the overall CO2 emissions by an impressive 46% compared to conventional materials. The carbon in castor oil is also 100% derived from atmospheric CO2 and not from CO2 locked in ancient fossils. Spektrum materials are also lighter and more durable than comparable materials delivering increased performance and comfort. Castor beans are a fantastic crop, able to thrive in meager soils where other plants won’t survive, or animals can graze. Spektrum’s castor beans are fully traceable, sustainably grown in India and poses no competition with food, causes no deforestation, or use any GMO.

When we think about mindful consumption, cost per use is a way of evaluating whether or not your purchase is sustainable or not. Asking questions like “will I use/wear this piece more than 30 times?” “Will I fix it when it breaks?” “When I’ve finished using it, will I extent the lifespan of the item by giving it to someone I know/charity?” All of these actions will decrease the overall carbon footprint of your purchase.
How do you work out the cost per use? Divide the price of the product by 30! We use 30 as this is the average amount of uses items are thought to have.
The Pragati project was launched in May 2016 driven by a baseline survey of more than 1,000 castor farmers in Gujarat, India. The state that supplies the majority of the world’s castor demand.
The goal of the project is to enable sustainable castor crop production by:
- Using good agricultural practices to increase yield and farmer income.
- Efficiently using water resources and maintaining soil fertility.
- Driving adoption of good waste management practices.
- Enabling better health and safety practices and respecting human rights.
- No forest areas are cleared or converted to grow castor beans.
No animal products are used.
The Story Behind Spektrum
"We are a group of friends, all from the mountain town of Åre, northern Sweden, who share a passion for a life lived outdoors and the wild. Up here, our weather changes in the blink of an eye; from extreme arctic sunlight to deep winter darkness; from heavy snowfall to fog and stormy rain. But that doesn’t stop us; it’s part of why we love it here. However, some of these rapid changes are because of mankind’s impact on the environment and we are determined to do what we can to minimize our footprint. We believe that you are like us. You enjoy the beauty and wonders of the wild, you are curious to explore new and exciting things and you would love nothing more than to share your adventures with your friends. You also willingly do your part to minimize your impact on the planet so that future generations will be able to enjoy the mountains and the great outdoors for years to come. Simply because it’s the right thing to do. We brought all that to life under one brand built on the values we live and play by."
