Transparency is a key part of the Allbirds mission. They proudly have a plan to eliminate our products’ carbon footprint, and it’s already in action. First, they measure the emissions of everything from their raw materials to their end of life. Next, they reduce impact by incorporating things like natural and recycled materials. And finally, they offset the little bit that’s left with carbon offsets, making Allbirds a completely carbon neutral business. But their goal is bigger—emit no carbon in the first place.

Tree: The tree fibre—TENCEL™ Lyocell—is sourced from South African farms that minimise fertiliser and rely on rainfall, not irrigation. Compared to traditional materials like cotton, it uses 95% less water and cuts their carbon footprint in half.

Wool: Allbirds sources their wool from New Zealand, where sheep outnumbers humans about six to one. Thanks to their wool, the process uses 60% less energy than materials used in typical synthetic shoes.

Sugar: The sugarcane used to make SweetFoam™ is sourced from southern Brazil, where it relies on rainwater, not irrigation. It’s a fully renewable resource that grows quickly, removing carbon from the atmosphere in the process.

Trino: Allbirds crafted Trino™ from a hefty serving of responsibly harvested eucalyptus tree fibers and a handful of ZQ Merino wool. Working hand-in-hand with their fiber producers, yarn spinners, and textile makers, they made sure their high quality knit was sustainably sourced from top to toe.

When we think about mindful consumption, cost per use is a way of evaluating whether or not your purchase is sustainable or not. Asking questions like “will I use/wear this piece more than 30 times?” “Will I fix it when it breaks?” “When I’ve finished using it, will I extent the lifespan of the item by giving it to someone I know/charity?” All of these actions will decrease the overall carbon footprint of your purchase.

How do you work out the cost per use? Divide the price of the product by 30! We use 30 as this is the average amount of uses items are thought to have.

The story behind Allbirds

Allbirds believe in making better things in a better way. Since inception, they have balanced purpose and profit, with a focus on combating the proliferation of petroleum-based materials in shoes and accessories. Their story began with superfine New Zealand Merino Wool, but they have since developed a Eucalyptus fibre knit fabric and a Sugarcane-based EVA foam, which they open-sourced for all to use, including competitors. Allbirds believe that collaborative development and the sharing of technologies will help protect the planet for future generations.

Meet the founders

A native of New Zealand, Tim Brown was always well versed in the magical qualities of merino wool. Inherently curious, he began asking himself why such a remarkable, sustainable resource was virtually absent in the footwear industry. And with that spirit of wonder, the Allbirds journey began. After years of researching and tinkering, Tim teamed up with Joey Zwillinger, an engineer and renewables expert. Together, they crafted a revolutionary wool fabric made specifically for footwear. The outcome? An entirely new category of shoes inspired by natural materials, and an ongoing mantra to create better things in a better way.

Rigorously Tested

Run confidently knowing we logged thousands of miles with 50+ amateur and pro athletes over a year-long testing period. Proving that sustainability does not have to compramise on style or performance.

Packaging

Allbirds have reimagined shoe packaging, using 90% post-consumer recycled cardboard that serves as a shoebox, shopping bag, and mailer all in one.
